Haymarket Square anchors downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a Piscataqua River seaport that ranks among the oldest towns in New England. The plaza takes its name from the market where farmers and traders once sold their goods, and the dwellings in the view show how closely homes stood beside commerce. Made around 1902 by the Detroit Publishing Company, the photograph survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from a firm whose views were widely sold as postcards and prints.
