This view looks out over the landing at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, where Portsmouth meets the Atlantic and the harbor that shaped the town from its early days. Settled by English colonists in 1623, Portsmouth grew into one of colonial New England's busiest ports, and its wharves handled timber, fish, and goods moving to and from distant markets. Shipbuilding and maritime trade drove the local economy for generations. Look at the waterfront here for signs of that working life: the docks, the vessels, and the buildings that once depended on the tides.
