The Appledore Hotel stood on Appledore Island, the largest of the Isles of Shoals, a cluster of rocky islands about six miles off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. The hotel grew out of a 19th-century summer colony that drew writers, artists and well-to-do families seeking sea air, and the landing shown here was the point where steamers and small boats brought guests ashore. Postcards like this one were popular in the early 1900s, when resort hotels promoted themselves through picture cards that travelers mailed home. Worth noticing is how the view mixes the working waterfront with the grand hotel above it, a reminder of how the islands balanced fishing and tourism.
