A boat landing at the Oceanic hotel on Star Island, in the Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast, is the subject of this view, with the small craft that ferried summer guests across the water. The picture is one of two 8 by 10 inch glass negatives made to be joined into a panorama, a wide format the Detroit Publishing Company used for its travel views. The islands drew vacationers from the late 1800s, when hotels on Star and Appledore islands catered to visitors arriving by steamer from the mainland. The catalog title points past the landing toward Appledore Island, so the scene also shows how closely the neighboring islands were tied together.
