White Island Light stands on one of the rocky islands of the Isles of Shoals, a small cluster about six miles off the New Hampshire coast near Portsmouth. This c1901 dry plate negative shows the lighthouse and the keeper's dwelling on the island's bare, exposed ground. The Detroit Publishing Company made its reputation with views of American towns, resorts and landmarks, and it sold many of them to travelers and railroads. Lighthouses like this one guided coastal shipping through the Gulf of Maine, and the Shoals were a notorious hazard to vessels.
