The Mount Washington Road climbs the Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains, and this view captures the carriage route that took summer travelers up the mountain's flank long before a paved highway existed. The road was built in the 1850s, and by the late nineteenth century it had become a popular destination, with horse-drawn coaches hauling visitors toward the summit for views across the surrounding peaks and valleys. Scenes like this one reflect the early tourism that grew around the White Mountains and helped establish the region as a national draw for hikers, hotel guests and photographers.
