The White Mountains rise in the distance across the open Conway meadows, a view that landscape painters and early photographers returned to again and again in the nineteenth century. The region drew visitors from Boston and New York by rail and stagecoach, and the grand hotels and summer tourism that followed helped turn the Conway valley and the surrounding peaks into a destination. Images like this one helped shape how Americans pictured New England's mountain country: a working farm valley set against high, rugged ridgelines.
