The Mount Washington Road climbs the White Mountains of New Hampshire in a series of tight switchbacks, and this view shows the route as travelers of the late nineteenth century would have seen it. The carriage road to the summit of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast, opened in 1861 and became one of the first in the country built for tourists rather than for freight or farming. Passengers rode in horse-drawn wagons or stagecoaches up the grade, and the trip was part of the appeal, drawing visitors to the mountain hotels and the summit House. Worth noticing is how the road is cut into the steep slope, showing the engineering that made the ascent possible.
