Echo Lake, tucked beneath the peaks of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, is the subject here, and the print presents it as a quiet, cupped basin framed by wooded slopes. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that turned out inexpensive lithographs by the thousands, issued scenes like this for a public eager to see the mountain country without leaving home. The hand-coloring, applied to the printed sheet, gave the lake and foliage a touch of individuality that the black-and-white impression could not. Catalogued as no. 1803 in the firm's raisonné, the piece is a useful reminder of how popular the White Mountains had become as a destination by the late nineteenth century.
