St. John's Church stands on Pleasant Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and this postcard presents it under the cheerful "Greetings from Portsmouth" banner that souvenir publishers favored in the early twentieth century. The church was built in the Federal style in the early nineteenth century and served as a parish for Episcopalians, and its tall steeple long made it a landmark visible from the harbor approaches. Postcards like this one were sent by travelers as inexpensive keepsakes, so the view also shows how a town's most recognizable building was packaged for visitors. Look at the foreground and the streetscape for clues about the era's traffic and dress.
