This view looks across Little Harbor toward the Wentworth Hotel, the grand summer resort on the Piscataqua River shore near Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Around 1901, such seaside hotels drew well-to-do visitors from Boston and other cities who came for sea air and leisure. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many photographs of American towns and resorts for travel markets, made this glass negative, and its composition emphasizes the hotel's position above the water. The image shows how the harbor and the hotel were closely tied to the local economy of the period.
