Set on the rocky shore of Little Harbor on the island town of New Castle, the Hotel Wentworth was a summer resort that drew visitors from Boston and beyond in the late 19th century. Its most famous guests arrived in August 1905, when delegates from Russia and Japan came to the Portsmouth area to negotiate the treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War. The Russian delegation stayed at the Wentworth while talks took place at the nearby Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which gave the hotel a brief place in international diplomacy. The building's broad porches and seaside setting reflect the leisure travel that shaped this corner of the New Hampshire coast.
