The mansion pictured here was the home of Benning Wentworth, New Hampshire's royal governor from 1741 to 1767, and it stands as one of the most important surviving Georgian houses in the colony. Its sweeping front and formal proportions reflected the wealth and ambition of the colonial elite who governed from Portsmouth, then the province's capital. Wentworth also issued many township land grants, including those in what became Vermont, which later fueled a long boundary dispute with New York. As a "Greetings from" souvenir, the card shows how the house had become a local landmark by the time such cards were popular.
