The Wentworth Hotel sits on a rocky point at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, on Newcastle Island in the seacoast town of Newcastle, New Hampshire. The grand resort, built in 1874 and later famous as the site of the 1905 Treaty of Portsmouth that ended the Russo-Japanese War, drew wealthy summer guests from Boston and beyond who arrived by steamer and rail. Its wide porches and white clapboard facade reflect the Victorian taste for seaside leisure of the period, when New England coastal hotels were among the region's largest attractions.
