Portsmouth's naval shipyard sits on Seavey's Island in the Piscataqua River, and this postcard view captures the harbor side of that working yard. The Portsmouth Navy Yard opened in 1800 and built and repaired warships for well over a century, making it one of the earliest federal shipyards in the country. Postcards like this one, popular from the late 1890s through the mid-20th century, were often sent by sailors and visitors who wanted to show off the waterfront. Look closely at the harbor edge and the vessels moored along it to get a sense of how central the water was to the yard's daily work.
