Few posters of the period tie a suburb so directly to a day out on the water, but this one does: "Twickenham by Tram" pairs a riverside town on the Thames with sailboats on the river. It was designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer, the American-born artist who became one of London's most influential poster designers in the 1920s, and printed in London by The Baynard Press in 1924. It was issued by Electric Railway House, the headquarters of the companies that ran London's trams, buses, and Underground, so its purpose was to encourage Londoners and visitors to travel out to Twickenham. Posters like this one were part of a broader effort in the interwar years to market leisure travel as an everyday pleasure.
