Few posters from the period single out a river crossing so directly. This one takes the Colne at Uxbridge, a market town on London's western edge, and puts a bridge at its center. Designed by the American-born E. McKnight Kauffer and printed in London by the Baynard Press in 1924, it belongs to the wave of travel advertising that encouraged Londoners to explore the countryside just beyond the city. Kauffer, who worked in London throughout the 1920s, favored flat areas of color and simplified shapes, and the bridge and water here show that approach at work.
