Few regiments have a more recognizable mascot than the Scots Greys, and this Collier's cover presents its drum horse as the centerpiece. The regiment's gray horses gave it its nickname, and the drum horse, which carried the kettledrums at the front of the band, was a visible symbol of the unit's pride. Published in the first weeks of 1915, the cover appeared in an American weekly just a few months after Britain had entered the First World War, when the Scots Greys were already on active service in France and Belgium. The picture is a reminder of how far British cavalry imagery reached into American popular culture during the war.
