This color print presents Mary, Queen of Scots, who was crowned as an infant in 1542 and later spent nearly two decades as a prisoner of her cousin Elizabeth I of England before her execution at Fotheringhay Castle in 1587. Forced to abdicate in 1567, she fled to England, where her claim to the English throne made her a constant concern for Elizabeth's government. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed by the Photoglob company of Zurich in the 1880s that built up color from a series of lithographic stones. Photochroms like this one, made roughly between 1890 and 1900, were popular as souvenirs and wall pictures, and their bright, layered color shows how the era presented historical figures to the public.
