Iona, a small island off Scotland's west coast, is the subject here, and the poster's chief landmark is its abbey, the site of the monastery St. Columba founded in 563. Tom Gilfillan's lithograph promotes David MacBrayne's steamers, which linked the Hebridean islands and mainland ports and carried visitors to places that were otherwise hard to reach. Printed in Glasgow around 1930, it reflects the period when transport companies marketed Scotland's scenery and historic sites to tourists. The bold color and simplified forms show how interwar travel posters aimed to make a remote destination feel both inviting and historic.
