Its title is a question put directly to the viewer: "What are you doing to prevent this?" The poster was issued in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War under the Junta Delegada de Defensa de Madrid, the civilian body that coordinated the city's defense after Nationalist forces reached its outskirts in late 1936. The subjects listed for it are mothers and children and air operations, reflecting the aerial bombing that struck Madrid's streets and residential districts during the siege. Versions were printed with text in English, Spanish and French, which suggests it was meant to reach foreign audiences as well as Spaniards.
