Italy is better known to most travelers for its ruins and summer coastlines, so a poster that presents the country as a winter destination is worth a second look. Issued by ENIT, the Italian national tourist agency, in Genoa in 1935, it reflects the agency's effort to promote skiing and other winter sports alongside the traditional tourist routes. Its artist, Michahelles, worked in the color-lithograph style that was common for travel posters of the 1930s, when governments across Europe used bold color and simplified forms to reach a growing audience of middle-class travelers.
