Taken across the Piazza San Marco, this view centers on the Basilica and its domes, with the square's arcades and the bell tower rising behind. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that printed several lithographic stones, each inked in a different color, from a photographic negative. The campanile visible here stood until it collapsed in 1902, so the picture shows the square as it looked shortly before that loss. Photochroms like this one were widely sold as travel souvenirs.
