Rather than a daylight view of the city's canals, this color lithograph poster shows a gondola at night carrying a couple across the water. The Strobridge Lithographing Company, which worked from Cincinnati and New York, printed it around 1891, when American firms produced large, vivid posters for theaters, entertainments and advertisers. The subject terms include historical drama, which suggests the sheet was meant to draw audiences to a stage production set in Venice. Its record also notes registration with the U.S. Copyright Office.
