Catalogued as number 1187 in the Photoglob Zürich series, this view shows the façade of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice, its domes and arches rendered in soft color. The Zürich firm produced photochrom prints in the 1890s, a process that layered photographic images with lithographic color stones to give the scenes a painted look. Such views were widely sold as travel mementos, and this one captures the basilica as many visitors of the period first encountered it. Begun in the 11th century in a Byzantine style, the church is known for its gold mosaics and its five domes, features that the color process helps bring out.
