Pastel crayon on brown paper gives this view of the Venetian lagoon a warm, grainy surface, quite unlike the black-and-white lithographs Joseph Pennell is better known for. The reverse bears his pencil signature and a title, first written as "The Lagoon" and then crossed out in favor of "Lagoon, Venice." The date of about 1909 places it during the period when Pennell was illustrating Henry James's *Italian Hours*, and the catalog notes that this sheet belongs to a group of Venice drawings made at that time but not reproduced in the book. Gondolas and open water are its main subjects.
