The great clock at the edge of St. Mark's Square is the subject here, shown with the bronze Moors who strike the hours on the bell above the tower's arch. Its astronomical dial dates to the late fifteenth century, and by the 1700s it was one of Venice's most recognizable sights. This color engraving reproduces a painting by Canaletto, the Venetian master of city views, and was worked up by an English engraver for the many travelers and collectors who wanted images of the city.
