Here the Basilica di San Marco rises above the water of Venice's principal canal, with boats working the channel in the foreground. W.M. Craig drew the view and J.B. Neagle engraved it, a common pairing for engraved city views that carried images of distant places to readers and print buyers in the early and mid-nineteenth century. With its domes and Byzantine-inspired facade, the basilica was already one of Europe's best-known churches, so the view presents it as a civic emblem as much as a place of worship. The canal boats are worth noticing, since they show the city's daily traffic moving past its most famous monument.
