This view looks down the entrance to the Grand Canal in Venice, where the water opens from the lagoon past the domes and palazzo façades at the mouth of the canal. It is plate 47 of *Excursions Daguerriennes*, published in Paris in 1842, and it reproduces a daguerreotype by the optician Noël-Marie-Paymal Lerebours. Early photographs could not yet be printed alongside text, so engravers such as Martens translated them into etched and aquatinted plates, and the color was added by hand. The print is worth a look for that mix of a photographic source and skilled handwork.
