Few buildings in Russia are as instantly recognizable as the Church of Saint Basil the Blessed, whose clustered onion domes rise above Red Square in Moscow. This plate reproduces a daguerreotype by N. P. Lerebours, engraved by P. Legrand and printed by Bougeard, and it appeared as plate 52 in *Excursions Daguerriennes*, published in Paris in 1842. Built in the 1550s under Ivan IV, the cathedral was one of the views in a book that drew on the new photographic process, and the hand coloring restores the bright domes that the silvery daguerreotype could not show.
