The Kremlin's walls and towers, rising above the Moscow River, are the subject of this plate, which was made from a daguerreotype rather than drawn by hand. It appeared as plate 53 in *Excursions Daguerriennes*, a Paris volume issued in 1842 by Noël-Marie-Paymal Lerebours, who used engraving to reproduce early photographs because printing presses could not yet print them directly. The image was etched and aquatinted, with Hurlimann and Bougeard credited on the plate, and colored by hand afterward. Those added tints are worth noticing, since they show how publishers softened the stark tones of the original daguerreotype for a book audience.
