This view centers on the Pont Neuf and its equestrian statue of Henry IV, the king under whose reign construction of the bridge began before his assassination in 1610. The image comes from *Excursions Daguerriennes*, a series of plates that N. P. Lerebours published in 1842 to show Paris as early photography had recorded it. Martens engraved the scene in etching and aquatint from a daguerreotype, and the hand coloring gives it a painterly finish. The bronze statue shown here is a later replacement, since the original was melted down during the Revolution.
