The Arc de Triomphe at Orange, in southern France, is a Roman triumphal arch built around the turn of the first century, and this plate shows it as a daguérreotype-based engraving rather than a photograph itself. Nicolas-Marie Paymal Lerebours, a Paris optician and early daguerreotypist, produced the original image, which was then translated into etching and aquatint by a team of engravers and hand-colored for the book Excursions Daguerriennes, published in 1842. The result is one of the earliest attempts to reproduce photographic views in printed books, when the process still required skilled hands to turn a silvery plate into something that could be printed in quantity.
