This Acropolis view began as a daguerreotype by Nicolas-Marie-Paymal Lerebours, and the engraver Appert turned it into plate 21 of *Excursions Daguerriennes*, published in Paris in 1842. Photographs could not yet be printed alongside text, so engravers translated daguerreotypes like this one into etched and aquatinted plates that printers could reproduce, then colored them by hand. Long exposures meant that moving crowds left no trace, so the ruins appear empty and timeless. The image records the hilltop temples as travelers of the period saw them, well before later excavation and restoration reshaped the site.
