The Colosseum stands here as a plate from *Excursions Daguerriennes*, a volume of views made from daguerreotypes by the Paris optician Noël-Marie-Paymal Lerebours. Because early daguerreotypes needed long exposures, engravers such as Himely reworked them by hand into etchings and aquatints, and this copy has been colored by hand. Built under the Flavian emperors in the first century CE, the amphitheater was one of Rome's most recognizable ruins by the 1840s, and the plate shows how the new photographic process was used to document it for a wide public.
