This plate shows the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens, the fifth-century BC temple dedicated to Athena that was still standing in the 1840s, though it had been damaged over the centuries. It is an engraving, not a photograph. Printing photographs alongside text was not yet practical, so the publisher Noël-Marie-Paymal Lerebours had the image based on a daguerreotype transferred into etching and aquatint, then colored by hand. It appeared as plate 22 in *Excursions Daguerriennes*, a Paris publication of 1842 that used early photographic views to present distant monuments to a European audience. The hand-coloring and the engraver's interpretation of the daguerreotype are worth noticing.
