The Colosseum takes center stage in this hand-colored lithograph, a view of the great amphitheater at Rome that artists of the period returned to again and again. Construction of the Flavian Amphitheatre began under the emperor Vespasian around 70 CE and was completed under his son Titus in 80 CE, when it held gladiatorial contests, beast hunts and public spectacles for tens of thousands of spectators. By the time printmakers were drawing it in the nineteenth century, its broken outer arches had become a symbol of ancient Rome's grandeur and decay, and hand-coloring gave collectors a way to bring warm tones to its weathered stone.
