Few views of the 1870 siege put the viewer so close to the city's defenses, and this lithograph shows one of the bastions of the wall that ringed Paris. That wall dated to the 1840s, when the government built the fortifications on a plan associated with Adolphe Thiers. After the defeat at Sedan in September 1870, Prussian armies closed around the capital, and the bastions became the front line. Over the following four months, Parisians endured bombardment, shortages and hunger, and prints like this one reached a public eager for news of the defense.
