Few landmarks are as recognizable as the Eiffel Tower, and here it rises above the grounds of the Exposition Universelle of 1900, the world's fair that drew large crowds to Paris. Gustave Eiffel's iron tower was built for the 1889 exhibition and was still the centerpiece of the fair a decade later. This picture is a photochrom, a color print made by a lithographic process that was popular for travel views in the 1890s. Its soft, layered colors reflect the period's appetite for colored scenes of distant places.
