This full view looks across the Champ de Mars toward the Trocadero, the palace built for the 1878 world's fair, with the Eiffel Tower rising in front of it. The tower was completed for the 1889 Exposition Universelle and was then the tallest structure in the world, though many critics first objected to its iron lattice. The record ties this print to the 1900 Exposition Universelle, when the tower again anchored the fairgrounds. Photochrom prints were made by a Swiss process that layered several color stones over a black-and-white negative, producing the soft, painted look popular in late-nineteenth-century travel views.
