Rather than a photograph, this is a color lithographic poster that puts the Arc de Triomphe at the center of a busy traffic circle, the Place de l'Étoile, where twelve avenues meet. Printed in Paris in 1947, it was an advertisement for Air France, the national airline formed in 1933, and it presents the city's most famous monument as a destination for travelers returning to a capital recovering from the Second World War. Napoleon commissioned the arch in 1806 to honor the French army, and it was completed in 1836. Posters like this one show how airlines pitched postwar travel through images of landmarks.
