The Place de la Concorde, the broad square at the head of the Champs-Élysées, anchors this poster with its twin fountains and the obelisk at its center. That obelisk, carved in Egypt during the reign of Ramesses II, was given to France by the viceroy of Egypt and raised on the square in 1836. During the Revolution the site was the location of the guillotine, where Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed, and it took its present name in 1795. Issued by the French railway networks around 1930, the poster invited travelers to see the city by train, and the Chaix printing house was among Paris's leading poster printers of the period.
