The Palais de Justice on the Île de la Cité is the particular subject here, a complex that has served as a royal palace, a seat of Parliament, and a courthouse since the medieval period. This colored lithograph shows the building as it appeared in the first half of the nineteenth century, when it was the home of Paris's principal law courts. The print was drawn from nature by Deroy and lithographed by Becquet, and published by E. Morier, the kind of topographical view that circulated widely among collectors of Parisian scenes. Its hand coloring, which was often applied by workshops after printing, gives the stone façade and surrounding streets a warmth that plain black-and-white views lack.
