Napoleon III's surrender at Sedan on September 2, 1870, is the event this picture records, and it marks a turning point in the Franco-Prussian War. Trapped with his army after the fighting around Sedan, the emperor gave himself up to Prussian King Wilhelm I, and the defeat led directly to the collapse of the Second French Empire. Within days, Parisians declared a republic, and the war dragged on for months more. Pictures of the meeting were popular at the time, so it is worth looking at how the artist arranged the two rulers and the officers around them.
