Napoleon appears here amid smoke and flame, a setting that distinguishes this color halftone from the more formal portraits usually made of him. The Library of Congress dates it to between 1900 and 1930, when halftone screens were widely used to reproduce paintings and illustrations in color, so the image probably copies an earlier artwork rather than recording a live scene. Napoleon I, emperor of the French, governed from Paris and lived at the Tuileries, and the officers gathered around him hint at a tense military moment. The print comes from the John Davis Batchelder collection, a group of color reproductions that shows how such images circulated.
