Few posters of the 1890s capture Parisian leisure as directly as this one, which advertises the Palais de Glace on the Champs-Élysées. The indoor rink opened in 1893, and it drew skaters who came to be seen as much as to skate. Jules Chéret, the leading poster artist of the period, designed the image, and it was printed that year by Chaix. His bright palette and lively, graceful figures helped define the Belle Époque poster and turned the city's advertising walls into a form of popular art.
