Edward Sorel drew this color portrait of Charles de Gaulle in June 1966, and he supplied the title himself before Esquire ran it in December 1967 with the caption "The Spokesman." In 1966 de Gaulle was in the middle of his presidency of France and had recently withdrawn French forces from NATO's integrated military command, a move that drew sharp reactions across the Atlantic. Sorel's magazine work relied on pointed caricature, so the drawing reads as a comment on de Gaulle's independent, combative style rather than a neutral likeness.
