Nine years after Denis Diderot's death in 1784, this color aquatint by P.M. Alix shows the philosopher in an oval frame, head and shoulders turned slightly to the left. The print appeared in 1793, during the Revolution, when Diderot was widely honored as a champion of reason and free inquiry. He had spent decades editing the *Encyclopédie* with Jean le Rond d'Alembert, a multivolume project that gathered knowledge on crafts, science, and politics and was often viewed as a challenge to church and crown. Portraits like this one helped keep his image before the public as the Revolution reshaped French culture.
