Spectacles are an unusual detail in a formal portrait, and they are the first thing to notice here. Eyeglasses were developed in Italy in the late 13th century, and by the Renaissance they had come to suggest learning, since reading and writing depended on them. The deep red cape trimmed with ermine points to high ecclesiastical rank, because such fur-lined robes were reserved for senior clergy and other dignitaries. Together, the costume and the spectacles present a figure who was both powerful and scholarly.
