The print reproduces a head-and-shoulders portrait of Henry VII, shown turned slightly to the left, a pose that gives a three-quarter view of the king's face. The original oil painting dates to 1505, when Henry was in his late forties and had ruled England for two decades after winning the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. That victory ended the Wars of the Roses, and his marriage to Elizabeth of York helped join the houses of Lancaster and York under the Tudor line. The photographic copy, made sometime between 1850 and 1900, shows how reproduction let images of royal figures circulate widely in the Victorian era.
